About the museum
Museum Schwarzbach is an open-air museum in the Rochlitz Mulde valley. An association had historic half-timbered buildings from the region, which could no longer be maintained at their original sites, moved to Schwarzbach and rebuilt there. Museum operations for individual visitors and groups have run since 2000; Klaus Zschage largely laid the foundation, and since 2018 a new generation of volunteers has run the association.
Six small and large buildings form the ensemble; the oldest was built in 1567, the newest in the 19th century. They include a combined living and stable house from Doberenz dating from 1715, a side building from Leupahn with an exhibition on half-timbered construction, and a combined living and stable house from Poppitz. In rebuilding, a specific historical state was chosen for each house.
The houses present life and everyday living in the countryside, building and tool knowledge, and old crafts. A blacksmith and an intarsia craftsman work on site on Saturdays, while other trades, such as a rope maker, can be seen at events. The grounds also include a garden with old vegetable varieties and dye plants, and a museum shop; fixed events are the harvest festival (Erntedank) and the Light Festival (Lichtfest).
