About the museum
The Schoolkat is a small Low German half-hall house (Fachhallenhaus) of the Bordesholm type, built in 1764, and one of the oldest buildings in Langwedel. The name refers to its former use: one of the rooms to the left of the hall (Diele) served as the village schoolroom.
To preserve the building, the Kultur- und Museumsverein Schoolkat Langwedel (Schoolkat Langwedel Culture and Museum Association) was founded in 1994. It had the cottage restored and runs it as a small village museum. In the Schoolstuv (schoolroom) there are school benches from around 1900 and later, including a Rettichbank (radish bench), as well as slates, teaching materials, anatomical models and books. The hall displays evidence of rural life and early technology.
In the carriage house (Remise), tools and machines from Langwedel and the surrounding area are on display, separated into household and agriculture. The association welcomes new members, donations and interesting items for the collection. On the meadow behind the house, the association holds readings, concerts and festivities; in the summer half-year, civil marriage ceremonies also take place in the cottage.
