About the museum

Farmer Wilhelm Uhl had the house on Göllheim's Hauptstraße built in 1898 as a grand residence. A considerable inheritance from relatives in the USA made this possible. Uhl served as mayor of the town from 1904 to 1920. The sandstone building, with its oriel and carriage gateway, shows features of the Gründerzeit and Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) inside, including embossed wallpapers, ceiling paintings, colored-glass wooden doors, and tiled stoves.

In 1979 a group of committed citizens around Dieter Wevers set up the local history museum in the house; since 2005 the Kulturverein Göllheim (cultural association), a partner of the municipality, has looked after the house. Between 2014 and 2015 the museum was completely redesigned and reopened on December 15, 2015. Since then, the exhibition has worked with media, listening, and touch stations. The family's former reception hall has also served as a wedding room since 2016.

Across about 300 square meters on two floors, the museum tells Göllheim's history from the first settlers through the Romans and Merovingians to the Battle of Hasenbühl in 1298, in which King Adolf of Nassau fell. There is also a geology room on the Tertiary period, which covers the history of the local cement works, documentation on the Uhl family, and, since 2004, the doll and doll's house collection of Karin Heinz.
