About the museum

The Eisenberg museum has existed since the late 1970s. In 1997 it received a new focus on the Roman period, which has been reflected in its name ever since. The occasion was the discovery of a large part of a Roman small town, the vicus of Eisenberg, which the state archaeological service uncovered in the 1990s; since 2003, an archaeological park with protective buildings has been under construction there.

The museum is housed on the second floor of Haus Isenburg. It displays finds from the vicus and its cemetery, including coins, bowls, vases, jugs and bread stamps. Because Eisenberg was already an important site for iron smelting in the Celtic and Roman periods, the route from ore through intermediate products to the iron bar is shown.

The exhibition also includes a model of a burgus (fortified watchtower), a diorama of life in a vicus, and a room furnished as a Roman kitchen. A clay cast shows the Christian bread stamp of the 4th century from the excavations at the burgus; the original is in the Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer.
