About the museum

The collection goes back to the district museum opened in 1913. Its founder was the private banker Anton Maurer, who set it up in the Schwabmünchen water tower, then highly modern and one of the early reinforced concrete buildings in Germany. The aim was to document the material culture of a region extending well beyond the town; the art collection also focused on works of supra-regional importance.

Since 1984 the holdings have been housed in a centrally located former school building on the Holzheystraße, which was converted for museum use. Since 1991 the museum has been led by a full-time academic director; since then the collection concept has been expanded, and the house has developed from a classic permanent-exhibition museum into a lively exhibition venue.

Key focus areas include finds from the Roman pottery center of Rapis, sacred sculptures from the 15th to 18th centuries, costume and clothing, furniture, ceramics, pewter and copper, locks and keys, and games. A dedicated gallery shows contemporary art, and readings, music and theater also take place in the museum.
