About the museum

The Archäologisches Museum Königsbrunn opened in 1993 and is located in the basement of the town hall on the market square. It is run on a volunteer basis by the Arbeitskreis für Vor- und Frühgeschichte (working group for prehistory and early history), whose excavations in Königsbrunn and the southern district of Augsburg form the foundation of the collection.

The tour is arranged chronologically: a timeline and maps of the find sites lead from Neolithic stone tools through the Bell Beaker culture, the Bronze and Urnfield periods to the Hallstatt and La Tène periods. Among the best-known pieces is a Bell Beaker–period burial with the skeleton in its original position. Richly furnished graves from Oberottmarshausen with a sword, bronze cup, and gold jewelry testify to the wealth of an upper class of the late Bronze Age, and a large model shows a Hallstatt-period village with about 50 houses.

Further sections are devoted to the Roman period along the Via Claudia Augusta, Alemannic graves of the early Middle Ages, and a medieval craftsmen's settlement. Original finds are supplemented by drawings, models, and figures in reconstructed clothing. Outside the museum, further sites in Königsbrunn can be visited, such as the Early Bronze Age stone cist at the cemetery and the Mithraeum.
