About the museum

The entrepreneur Carl Stahmer had the villa built around 1900 for his son Robert, whose company in Oesede made railway signaling systems. The house, with its towers and gables, was among the first buildings in the area with electricity and running water. After the family moved away in 1907, the plant's technical directors lived here at first; after World War II, British troops used the building, and from 1947 the employment office.

In 1968 the villa passed to the municipality of Oesede, which in 1970 became part of the new town of Georgsmarienhütte. Between 1975 and 1980, mainly volunteers converted the listed house into a museum, which opened in 1980 and has had a full-time director since 1986. Surviving from the time of construction are stucco ceilings, marble, Art Nouveau windows, and an orientally designed bath, among other things.

The second floor is devoted, on about 170 square meters, to the city's history, which is closely tied to the ironworks founded in 1856, named after King George V and Queen Marie. Topics include mining, the industrial village, the pioneers of the ironworks, the Nazi era, the founding of the town in 1970, and the plant today. Display cases made from railway construction elements, many hands-on stations, and easy-to-understand texts make the exhibition, redesigned especially for children in 2009, vivid. Art exhibitions take place on the third floor; in the Herrenzimmer (gentlemen's room), the registry office performs weddings.
