About the museum
The Museum Winningen was founded in 1968 and is housed in the former village school, built in 1833 by the Prussian master builder Claudius von Lassaulx. Of the nearly fifty school buildings that Lassaulx planned, the Winningen school is the one whose interior structure has been changed least. Between 2005 and 2008 the house was restored faithfully, inside and on the Moselle façade.
On the ground floor, the former teacher's apartment, there are fossils from the Lower Devonian, prehistoric, early historical and Roman finds, the beginnings of wine marketing, and the domestic culture of the 19th century with kitchen, loom and bedroom. The two former classrooms on the upper floor focus on local history since its first mention in 871 and on Winningen honorary citizen August Horch, founder of the Horch and Audi brands.
The courtyard, wine press hall and cellar are devoted to viticulture: historical winegrowing tools, presses from the spindle press to the modern horizontal press, and a distillery. In the courtyard stands the Winninger Fass (Winningen barrel), inaugurated in 2016, rebuilt from two historical storage barrels from 1889; it holds around 30,000 liters. The museum is supported by the Museumsverein Winningen (museum association).
