About the museum
On the site in Emmerstedt, a district of Helmstedt, a farm has existed since 1753; it was operated as a Kothsassenhof, that is, a smallholding. In 1991 the Heimatkreis Emmerstedt e. V. (local heritage association) acquired the farmstead and set up a rural museum there, which is run by volunteers.
The museum comprises around 600 square meters of exhibition space in the former residential house, the stables and the barns, plus about 900 square meters of outdoor grounds. The collection numbers around 3,000 objects, from simple field tools to a threshing machine.
In the house you can see, among other things, the old kitchen, living rooms, traditional costumes, regional wildlife and beekeeping; one area is devoted to local mining at the Grube Emma mine. Workshops of the blacksmith, carpenter and wheelwright, the stables, a slaughterhouse, a carriage house and the loft above the stables with textile and craft themes complete the tour. A model railway runs through a re-created landscape. Events throughout the year include a Schlachtefest (traditional butchering feast), a Midsummer Night concert, open-air cinema, a museum festival and a Christmas market.
