About the museum
The museum on Schloßstraße, which also houses the tourist information office, tells two sides of the town: the music town and the winter sports center. For nearly 400 years, musical instruments have been made in the Saxon Vogtland and the neighboring region of northwest Bohemia; in the second half of the 19th century the region grew into a world center of instrument making. In 1913, around three quarters of the world's supply of strings came from the Vogtland, as did more than half of all harmonicas.
The exhibition documents how the place on the Aschberg developed into a music town: around 1928, about 10,000 people in the Klingenthal area worked in instrument making. Between 1961 and 1985 many harmonica firms merged into the Klingenthaler Harmonika-Werk, from which the brand name "Weltmeister" emerged. C. A. Seydel Söhne is still in Klingenthal today and is the oldest harmonica manufacturer in the world still in production.
The second focus is winter sports: more than twenty medal winners at the Olympic Games and world championships come from the ski area on the Aschberg, beginning with Harry Glaß, who won Olympic bronze in 1956. Historical documents, photographs, sports equipment and ski jump models show the development of skiing. Alongside the permanent exhibition there are concerts, events, special exhibitions and, every year, a popular Christmas exhibition.
