Nachbau eines eisenzeitlichen Hauses
Reconstructed Iron Age house combining living quarters and stable in the freely accessible Archaeological Area on Amrum, near the Vogelkoje Meeram.
About the museum
In the dunes between Norddorf and the Vogelkoje Meeram, archaeologists have been excavating the remains of a settlement from around the time of the birth of Christ for decades. Shifting dunes had long covered the floor plans of eleven combined houses (living quarters and stable under one roof) and several small huts before the wind uncovered them again. In the Iron Age the island looked different: instead of dunes, heath, deciduous forest, and rectangular fields characterized the Geest.
Since 2011 the area has been developed as an Archaeological Area with a boardwalk and information boards. In 2014 a reconstruction of one of the houses was built at the original site, for which the environment ministry granted an exception in the Amrumer Dünen nature reserve. The 15-meter-long, thatched house was built as authentically as possible with pedunculate oak, grass sods, reeds, and plant-fiber ropes, and shows the living area with hearth and the stable area under one roof.
The area also includes a Neolithic megalithic tomb and a reconstruction of a Viking Age sunken-floored house. The Amrum association Öömrang Ferian offers tours on the island's history.
