About the museum
Master tailor Brother Aurelian Binswanger ran the tailoring workshop of Erzabtei St. Ottilien for four decades and has been collecting historical sewing machines since 1970. His collection led to the founding of the Sewing Machine Museum in autumn 2007, which the abbey officially opened.
About 380 machines from the first 140 years of international sewing machine history are on display in the rooms of the former convent laundry. Rarities include one of the first working models from 1866, the first electric sewing machine from 1924 and a designer machine from 1957; there are also children's and doll sewing machines. Some pieces are room-sized and were used to make tarpaulins, while smaller machines were used for church vestments, gloves or straw hats.
