About the museum
The school museum goes back to the collection of Hildesheim education professor Rudolf W. Keck. He gathered teaching materials and textbooks from dissolved elementary schools in the district and, in 2003, when he retired, founded the museum on that basis.
For 14 years it was housed at the Domäne Marienburg, the university's culture campus. In 2018 it moved to the ground floor of the Volkshochschule (adult education centre) in the city center; the archive and storage are on the university's main campus.
The collection comprises around 17,000 textbooks and school-historical objects, plus wall charts, photographs and films. It is a non-independent foundation (unselbstständige Stiftung) within the Stiftung Universität Hildesheim. Since 2020 the holdings have been gradually digitized, and virtual tours are also available.
