About the museum
The idea for the museum came up in 1990, when Norderbrarup celebrated 450 years of its school: the municipal council decided to set up an archive and a small museum in the attic of the school's main building. Initially, finds from the school attic were shown in two rooms renovated through volunteer labor.
Over the years the collection grew through finds and donations: discarded maps, games and schoolbooks from a school in Lütjenburg, school notebooks around 150 years old, handicrafts, stuffed birds, and a room door painted by Martin Knüttel. In 2003 the collection of prehistoric and early historic stone tools returned on loan from the Landesmuseum Schloss Gottorf, where it had been since 1968; the same year the municipal council gave the museum the name "Knüttelmuseum".
In 2024 the museum moved out of the steep, hard-to-reach attic into new rooms in the old village school behind the main building. Access has been barrier-free since then, and the house also serves as a meeting place in the village alongside the church and the inn.
