About the museum
The folklore collection goes back to master painter and decorator Herbert Priske, who from the 1960s onward gathered utility objects from houses and farmyards of past centuries. In 1982 the collection found a place in the attic of the primary school, where Priske arranged it by subject area. Since 1986 the Kulturverein Mohrkirch (Mohrkirch culture association) has looked after the collection.
When the primary school was cleared and dismantled to make way for a single-story day-care center, the association looked for a new home. It found one in a village-typical workshop building on Hauptstraße, which the municipality rented and which the association renovated with volunteer labor in 2021. The old site was unfriendly to visitors because of its narrow rooms and steep stairs; in the new building, more than 1,400 large and small exhibits are arranged by subject area. The setup was led by Reinhard Pagel and Hansi Clausen.
