Deutsches Panzermuseum Munster
Germany's only tank museum shows more than 150 large objects from 1917 to the present and places them critically in the context of technological, social and military history.
About the museum
The museum grew out of the teaching collection of the Bundeswehr's armored corps school in Munster, which gathered vehicles and weapons for training purposes. In 1983 the Federal Ministry of Defense and the town of Munster agreed to put these holdings on public display. Since then the museum has been a joint civil-military institution: the Bundeswehr provides, maintains and repairs most of the exhibits, while the town is responsible for the exhibition, education and museum operations. A friends' association and volunteer “hobby commanders” support the work.
Since around 2010 the museum has fundamentally reoriented itself. Rather than pure technological history, it examines the vehicles from the perspectives of social, economic, cultural and political history, and explicitly sees itself as neither a hall of fame nor an anti-war museum. After public criticism of outdated exhibition texts, problematic sections were removed; since 2016 the entrance front has displayed a thought by Walter Benjamin, according to which anyone who wants peace must talk about war. In 2019 the museum received the museum quality seal of the Museumsverband Niedersachsen und Bremen.
In February 2023 a new permanent exhibition opened that leads in eight chapters from the First World War to the futures of the tank and makes suffering, killing and dying visible as a recurring theme. It occupies two halls; in three further halls visitors can freely explore a visible storage area. In total the museum shows more than 150 large objects on over 10,000 square meters, including vehicles of the Reichswehr, Wehrmacht, NVA (East German army) and Bundeswehr as well as foreign tanks.
In 2024 more than 120,000 visitors came; the museum's YouTube channel has around 150,000 subscribers. Federal funding has been earmarked for a new building to replace the older halls.
