About the museum

The Phonomuseum "Alte Schule" in Seeholz, part of Holzdorf, goes back to a private radio collection: the carpenter and restorer Johann Fischerkeller had built up a radio museum in Blickstedt. When he looked for a successor, Rolf Pokrant and his son Nico took over the holdings in 2010 and opened a new museum in the former classrooms of the village school in May 2011. It is still run today by the Pokrant/Jacobsen family.

On more than 400 square meters in four rooms, the exhibition traces about a hundred years of sound and entertainment technology from 1880 to 1980 – from music boxes, phonographs, and gramophones through crystal radios, Volksempfänger, and music cabinets to tape recorders and stereo systems. The collection comprises about 1,600 devices (as of 2025). Alongside the technology, it also covers the history of the music and sound-carrier industry and artists and orchestras of past decades.

Many exhibits are in working order and are demonstrated during the tours; a workshop of its own keeps them running. For visitor groups there is a museum café furnished in 1950s style in 2018.
