About the museum

The village museum is based on the collection of the former local history museum in Kius, which master painter Hans Tüxen and his father built up over many decades. The objects come from houses, farms, and craft workshops in the municipalities of Ulsnis and Steinfeld, some of them dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Donations and loans from local residents have continued to expand the collection since then.

The collection includes a camera that Emil Tüxen bought in 1898 and used to document village life; his photographs later became part of the municipal chronicle. Because the founding family were painters, the painting trade takes up a lot of space, with a paint mill, stencils, and tools. The museum also shows carpenter's tools and planes, wooden kitchenware, earthenware and enamelware, and an open hearth with a cauldron hook.

A special exhibit is a Margarethen cabinet. Cabinets of this kind, which held nursing supplies, go back to a charitable foundation ("Margarethenspende") that a farmer established in 1883 after the death of his daughter. This example still has its original walnut-grain painting; the crown with the portrait of the namesake was reconstructed.
