About the museum
The Angelner Dampfeisenbahn (Angeln Steam Railway) began in 1977 with the purchase of a steam locomotive from the Danish State Railways. In 1979 the association found a home in Kappeln in a rented engine shed; the first trains ran between Kappeln and Süderbrarup during the first Heringstage (herring days) in May, and in the very first year about 1,000 passengers rode along. After the line was renovated in 1980, passenger numbers rose steadily.
Over the years, more vehicles came from Scandinavia, including Norwegian passenger coaches with wooden superstructures, diesel locomotives, and the railcar MO 1835 of the Danish State Railways. In 1990 the association acquired the Swedish steam locomotive S1 1916, the “schöne Schwedin” (“beautiful Swede”). Since 2011 the Angelner Dampfeisenbahn gGmbH has operated the museum railway, mainly with volunteer staff from the Freunde des Schienenverkehrs e. V. In 2020 it took over two Uerdingen rail buses from AKN, which also allow trips beyond Süderbrarup to Flensburg.
The journey takes about one hour through the fields and meadows of Angeln, with stops at Scheggerott and Wagersrott. In Süderbrarup there is time to photograph the locomotive or walk to the Thorsberger Moor, where weapons and jewelry were sacrificed more than 2,000 years ago. The steam locomotive is out of service in 2026 due to repairs; diesel locomotives or rail buses run instead.
