About the museum
Next to the Holländerwindmühle (Dutch-style windmill) Amanda, built in 1888 on the edge of Kappeln, stands a sawmill that has been in operation since 1900. Initially the mill supplied the drive power; when there was no wind, a steam engine helped out. Today the old machines run on electricity.
The house is run by St. Nicolaiheim e. V. (Kappelner Werkstätten) as a "Working Museum", where people with and without disabilities work together. During the tour, staff explain the history of the mill and the sawmill, start up individual machines and saw an entire log just as it was a hundred years ago.
The displayed machines make rustic benches and tables: boards and beams are processed with the frame saw, sanded and screwed together, and each piece finally receives a protective surface treatment. Rail trolleys, limewashed walls and very old saws shape the atmosphere of the house.
