About the museum
The Postgeschichtlicher Museumsverein (postal history museum association) in Friesoythe opened the museum in 1988, initially on just 16 square meters on the upper floor of the post office. Since 2004 it has been housed in the former town hall "Stadtmitte" on the Lange Straße, where on more than 300 square meters it shows how post and telecommunications have developed since the 18th century.
The second floor is devoted to telecommunications, from optical telegraphs to the smartphone. A separate room covers cable and overhead line technology, from the early gutta-percha underground cables of the 19th century to modern fiber-optic cables; cable sleeves and tools show the work of the telecommunications craftsmen.
Postal history is documented with the uniform of an Oldenburg postilion, a postal hand cart, a re-created workstation of a postal agent around 1910, letter boxes of several generations, and letters, documents and photos. In total the exhibition comprises around 1,000 exhibits.
