About the museum
When the municipalities of Edewecht and Bad Zwischenahn declared in 1990 that they could no longer keep the Kleinbahn Edewecht (light railway), the idea arose of using the line for a museum railway. The association was founded in September 1991 as Museumseisenbahn Ammerland-Saterland and first had to win approval for operations from the Deutsche Bundesbahn (Federal Railway).
At the end of 1994, the oldest German railcar of type T1 from 1925 moved into the engine shed in Ocholt on loan; in spring 1995 three railcars from the Kassel repair works followed, financed through a donation campaign. In 2013 the association received its current name together with the municipality of Barßel.
Today the MABS runs its rail bus VT 98 on the line built in 1908 from Ocholt toward Cloppenburg, which now extends as far as Sedelsberg. The trip passes through Barßel, old stations, and windmills, and crosses the historic bascule bridge of 1959 over the Elisabethfehn Canal. Another attraction is a ride on the historic peat railway (Feldlorenbahn) into the moor.
