Stadtgeschichtliches Museum Tangermünde

Museum on the history of Tangermünde on the first floor and in the cellars of the late Gothic brick town hall on the market square.

About the museum

The town hall of Tangermünde is among the most important secular buildings of North German brick Gothic. The east wing with its richly articulated showpiece façade was built around 1430, probably to plans by Hinrich Brunsberg; the court arcade and council chamber followed around 1480. The present stone outdoor staircase with gallery replaced a wooden outdoor staircase in 1846, and the last major restoration took place in 1928.

On the first floor and in the vaulted cellar rooms, the town of Tangermünde presents its Stadtgeschichtliches Museum (museum of local history). The permanent exhibition spans prehistory and early history, the great town fire of 1617 and the trial of Grete Minde, up to shipping on the Elbe and the town's industrial history. A town model shows Tangermünde around 1640.

The upper floor with the historic council chamber now serves as a wedding room. Special exhibitions complement the permanent presentation.
