About the museum
The Altmärkisches Museum was founded in 1888 by members of the Altmärkischer Museumsverein. Its core came from several private collections, including those of a Mr. von Alvensleben, Superintendent Müller and Sanitätsrat Friedrich Haacke, as well as the holdings of the former Literarischer Verein zu Stendal.
Since 1963 the museum has been housed in the former St. Catherine's Convent (Kloster St. Katharinen). The church, consecrated in 1468, and parts of the cloister survive from the complex; the newly laid out convent garden with herb beds, old fruit varieties and a rose bed is open all year round.
The permanent exhibition is devoted to the cultural history of the eastern Altmark and above all to Stendal's development as a Hanseatic city: long-distance trade and political importance in the Middle Ages are reflected in the city's brick buildings and in valuable sacred sculptures. Changing special exhibitions, including by artists from the region, complement the programme. The museum is run by the Hanseatic city of Stendal.
