About the museum
On the Hasunger Berg near Zierenberg there once stood an important Benedictine monastery. It was consecrated in 1081 and built over the grave of the hermit and itinerant preacher Heimerad, who had died there in 1019. Heimerad was soon venerated, and the monastery developed into a pilgrimage site. From the 17th century onward the complex was demolished; today almost nothing of it is visible above ground.
The Museumsverein Kloster Hasungen, founded in 2007, takes on the work of reconstructing the monastery's history. In October 2012 the museum opened in a new building, together with the Eco Path around the mountain. The town of Zierenberg is the museum's sponsor; the association takes over its operation.
The permanent exhibition shows surviving worked stones, capitals and column reliefs of the monastery and gives an overview of its history. It complements this with information on medieval building operations, depictions of medieval crafts and animated picture galleries. A further room is reserved for new research findings and changing exhibitions. The Eco Path leads to traces of the monastery and offers views over the Wolfhager Land.
