Römermuseum Mainhardt

Volunteer-run museum in the former chapel of the Mainhardt Schlösschen (small palace), with votive stones and finds from the Roman Limes fort.

Opening hoursAdmission €1

About the museum

As early as 1768, a Hohenlohe court councillor reported Roman finds in Mainhardt, which were later lost or destroyed. The basis of today's collection consisted of numerous votive stones found in 1944 during the construction of a temporary dwelling. Further finds came from construction work on the fort grounds and in the area of the Roman settlement, so that in 1987 a museum could be set up in the chapel of the former Hohenlohe-Bartenstein Schlösschen.

In 2004, the exhibition was redesigned with support from the state monument office. It is divided into military equipment, religion and culture, food and drink, and Roman building forms, and also shows a model of the fort. A particular rarity is several small altars to mother goddesses. Overall, the museum documents the Roman occupation of Mainhardt from around AD 150 to 260.

The museum is run by volunteers. Its offerings include guided tours, which also cover the excavated southwest corner of the fort, a regular lecture series, and the "Virtual Limes Worlds", which make life on the Limes experienceable in 3D.
