About the museum

Murrhardt is regarded as a town of painters, since many artists were born here or spent long periods in the town and its wooded landscape. The impetus for a dedicated collection came from the painter Reinhold Nägele, who wanted an exhibition venue for all the town's artists. For his 85th birthday in 1969 the Reinhold-Nägele-Sammlung was founded in his honor; his paintings and graphic works remain its focus to this day.

Since 1989 the Städtische Kunstsammlung has been housed in the Heinrich-von-Zügel-Saal of the town library in the center. The concept is to publicly show the works of all artists born in Murrhardt or closely connected with the town. Alongside Nägele and Heinrich von Zügel, works by Georg Adam Eger, Theodor Schnitzer, Willy and Oskar Zügel, Gustav Essig, Otto Groß, Carl Obenland and Trude Schüle are represented, from the 18th century to the present.

After renovation work the collection reopened in February 2024. Because the hall is also used for events, individual closing days can occur. In 2023 a catalogue raisonné of Nägele's printmaking, commissioned by the town, was also published.
