Freely accessible archaeological park on the Limes UNESCO World Heritage Site near Wittelshofen, with the outline of a Roman fort marked in the landscape and the LIMESEUM museum.

The exhibition shows how images on Roman coins carried political messages all the way to the Limes, and also looks at counterfeits. A soldier documented at Ruffenhofen guides visitors through the changing coinage of the Severan period.
About the museum
Near Ruffenhofen, just over two kilometers behind the Raetian Limes, stood a Roman fort that was probably first built of timber and earth under Emperor Trajan and later rebuilt in stone. The almost square complex covered nearly four hectares; its garrison is believed to have been a partly mounted auxiliary unit. An extensive civilian settlement grew up around the camp. Occupation ended around the middle of the 3rd century, apparently after a major fire.
The first small excavations took place in the late 19th century on behalf of the Reichs-Limeskommission (Imperial Limes Commission). Aerial archaeology and geophysical surveys later produced a detailed plan of the fort and settlement without the need for large-scale digging. To protect the archaeological site from the plow, the municipalities of Gerolfingen, Weiltingen and Wittelshofen formed a joint association in 2001; from 2002 onward, around 40 hectares of farmland were purchased and turned into grassland, and the Römerpark officially opened in 2003. Since 2005 the fort has been part of the Upper German-Raetian Limes UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In the park, plantings, paths and landscaping reveal the outlines of the fort and the vicus, complemented by a 1:10 scale model of the fort, a Roman garden and a viewing mound. The LIMESEUM opened in 2012: a round museum building dominated by glass and wood, designed by the Munich architects Karl + Probst. The permanent exhibition explains the stretch of the Limes between Mönchsroth and Arberg with a focus on Ruffenhofen; a character based on a soldier documented here guides visitors through military and everyday life. In addition, special exhibitions change every year.
