About the museum

The museum shows the history of Sinzig and its surroundings along the Rhine and Ahr rivers. It moved into the castle in 1956, after the town had acquired the complex; it had already been set up in 1953 as the Sinziger Museum. The castle itself was built as a neo-Gothic summer villa for the Cologne merchant Gustav Bunge between 1854 and 1858, on the foundations of a moated castle destroyed in 1689. The park is based on plans by Joseph August Lenné, and the painter Carl Christian Andreae designed the tower room between 1863 and 1865.

The collections range from prehistory to the present. Archaeological finds from the Rhine and Ahr, including evidence of Sinzig's Roman terra sigillata workshop, form one focus. The town history section shows a 17th-century town model, objects relating to guilds, firefighting and jurisdiction, and the history of the Sinzig tile factory. An art collection brings together works by Andreae and other painters of the Düsseldorf School with prints of Rhine Romanticism.

Since 2002 a friends' association (Förderverein) has supported the museum, which keeps setting new accents with its special exhibitions. On weekend opening days, the Tourist Information is also staffed in the castle.
