About the museum
On the foundations of a Roman farmstead near Möckenlohe, a district of Adelschlag between Eichstätt and Neuburg an der Donau, the central complex of a villa rustica was built. The farm lies near the former Roman road from the Pfünz fort to Nassenfels and was probably established in the 2nd century; it was excavated in the late 1980s.
In 1993, the Verein Römervilla Möckenlohe (association) was founded to secure the walls and finds together with the Bavarian State Office for Monument Protection. Afterwards, together with the Bavarian state agency for non-state museums, the central complex of the villa was erected over the original foundation walls, and all finds were displayed on site. In the reconstruction, emphasis was placed on authenticity and old materials; the residential house with colonnaded hall and apse, the kitchen, and the farmyard with heating, bakehouse and stables can be seen.
In the museum, display cases show the finds from the excavation, and a representative room presents a model and the reconstructed underfloor heating. Behind the building, the Roman heritage animal park shows old breeds such as Black-nosed sheep, Valais goats, chickens, longhorn cattle and Fjord horses, which match the appearance of animals on Roman reliefs.
