Römisches Museum für Kur- und Badewesen

Museum beneath the St. Andreas church in Bad Gögging, with remains of the oldest Roman spa north of the Alps.

Opening hoursAdmission €7

About the museum

The museum is located in the village center of Bad Gögging, directly beneath the nave of St. Andreas church. Exactly beneath the church interior lies the central basin of a Roman spa, which is considered the oldest of its kind north of the Alps.

The Romans, who were stationed at the nearby Abusina fort, discovered the effect of the sulfur water from the Gögging springs. Around 80 AD, Emperor Trajan had the first bathing facilities built here.

In the former main bath room, the central basin, four individual tubs, bathing utensils and the underfloor heating (hypocaust) have been preserved. Panels explain bathing culture and the course of a bath. Since July 2021, the museum has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Danube Limes. The Romanesque St. Andreas church is accessible only during the museum's opening hours.
