About the museum
The Abusina fort lies on the southern edge of Eining, on the Abens river, near the road to Bad Gögging. Around AD 80, a military camp was established here as a link in a chain of forts along the Danube. Initially the installations were built of wood and earth; later they were expanded in stone.
In the 2nd and 3rd centuries, the camp belonged to the border installations of the Upper German-Raetian Limes, at whose eastern end the frontier followed the Danube. Around AD 300, the large fort was replaced by a much smaller, heavily fortified Late Roman camp with a defensive tower in the southwest corner. It secured the border until the early 5th century and was destroyed by fire around AD 430; with that, the planned surveillance of the Danube also came to an end.
Today the roughly 1.9-hectare site is an archaeological open-air museum and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Limes. Visitors can see wall lines and building foundations, the Late Roman tower and other restored structural elements. Information boards in German and English and sound elements describe military and civilian life from the 1st to the 5th century. Every two years in August, the site comes alive during the Roman festival Salve Abusina.
