Steinheim in eastern Westphalia became a furniture town starting in 1864, when the art joiner Anton Spilker took over his father’s workshop and had it registered as a “factory of carved furniture.” Many apprentices from his workshop went on to found their own businesses, and an industry with at times more than 50 small and medium-sized firms developed.
At first richly carved individual pieces in the historicist style were made. Later, period furniture modeled on Baroque, Rococo, or Renaissance styles shaped the town’s reputation as a stronghold of period furniture, until the 1970s. Changing tastes and rising production costs then led to the decline of the industry.
Since 2002 the Furniture Museum has preserved this history on two floors of the former furniture factory of Joseph Günther. Across 900 square meters it shows furniture from various style periods, from Historicism to Art Deco and newer designs, along with eyewitness accounts and a panel on the development of the companies. The museum is run by a non-profit friends’ association.
