About the museum
In March 1944, the elementary school in Neckarelz was converted into the Neckarelz I concentration camp and served as a camp for twelve months. It was one of the six so-called Neckar camps, subcamps of the main Natzweiler camp in the Vosges, which emerged during 1944 around an underground armaments factory code-named "Goldfisch" (Goldfish). After the war, the building became a school again: today's Clemens-Brentano primary school.
The association KZ-Gedenkstätte Neckarelz set up a first memorial in 1998 and in October 2011 opened a new building on the school grounds, directly opposite the primary school. Architect Andreas Maria Lang's design is an elongated building with a curtain of wooden slats that recalls the stripes of a prisoner's uniform and a barcode. From inside, it opens the view onto the former concentration camp school and the former roll-call square.
The permanent exhibition is divided into four rooms: the Neckar camps as a concentration camp complex, an open space with paths from the camp, Goldfisch, and Natzweiler am Neckar. Together with the "Goldfisch" history trail in Obrigheim, it tells the story of the Neckar camps. Volunteer memorial guides look after visitors, and the site has been awarded the European Heritage Label.
