About the museum

The Deutsche Bundesbank opened its Geldmuseum (Money Museum) in 1999 on the grounds of its headquarters in the north of Frankfurt. Its aim is to introduce visitors both to the history of money and to the tasks of a central bank, from supplying cash to monetary policy in the euro area.

From 2014 to the end of 2016 the museum was thoroughly modernized and its exhibition space expanded from about 600 to around 1,000 square meters. Since then, the permanent exhibition has been divided into four thematic areas – cash, book money, monetary policy and global money – plus several smaller galleries. Numerous interactive stations and a 360-degree cinema complement the original objects.

The Bundesbank's collection comprises around 90,000 coins from antiquity to the present and about 260,000 banknotes from around the world, as well as pre-coinage means of payment such as cowrie shells and stone money. A particular favorite is a real gold bar from the bank's reserves that visitors are allowed to lift. With the playful special exhibition "Mein Geld & Ich" (My Money & Me), the museum also reaches out to school classes and groups exploring questions about handling their own money.
