About the museum
Between 1954 and 1994, dredged material from the Emden harbor was pumped onto the fields near Riepe and Riepsterhammrich. The Wasser- und Bodenverband Emden-Riepe (water and soil association) turned the silt into fertile farmland; over four decades, more than 100 million cubic meters were deposited. The museum documents this land reclamation project, which is unique in Germany.
The water and soil association and the local citizens' association founded the "Riepster Schlickmuseum," which opened on April 19, 1996. It was first housed in the attic of the Sparkasse savings bank building in Riepe. When the association completed its work as planned at the end of 2018 and the savings bank closed its branch, the newly founded Verein Schlickmuseum Riepe e. V. took over sponsorship. Since March 2019 the museum has been located on the neighboring Friesenstraße.
The museum displays documents, graphics, pictures and models. In a screening room, the project can additionally be explored through slides and films.
