About the museum
Kirchlauter has had a blacksmith museum since 1996. It is located in the former "Kirchner" forge on Kirchenstraße, a building erected in 1923 that was used as a workshop until the 1970s. The forge stands as an example of businesses that worked with traditional methods and, after the Second World War, lost touch with new machines and changing fields of work until the workshop was abandoned.
The building is a single-story sandstone structure with a half-timbered knee wall and a gable roof. When the left part of the building was converted into a garage in the mid-1970s, the gate and the workshop floor were altered; these changes were largely reversed later.
In the main room, the hearth, anvil and bellows have survived from the time of construction. A former wood and wash room serves as an exhibition room for hand tools, supplemented by display boards and pictures. On request, blacksmithing demonstrations show the old working techniques.
