About the museum

The Seebadmuseum Travemünde is a private foundation: the Verein für Heimatgeschichte der Hansestadt Lübeck, Ortsteil Travemünde und Umgebung – Heimatverein Travemünde for short – founded in 2003, opened it in 2007 after about two years of preparation. Donations from several foundations and companies made the setup possible; since then, volunteers have run the museum without public subsidies, financed by admissions, donations, and membership fees.

The museum is located in the Gesellschaftshaus at Torstraße 1 on the Travemünde market square, opposite St. Lorenz Church in the old town.

In terms of content, the exhibition spans from the founding of the seaside resort in 1802 to the present. On about 185 square meters, it covers bathing culture and beach fashion, the bathing establishment, lodgings of early spa guests, fishing, shipyards and seafaring, the Flying P-Liners, the former seaplane and land airport, Travemünde Week, as well as border stories and the arrival of refugees and expellees after 1945.

Audio stations, films, and numerous exhibits bring local history to life. Since International Museum Day 2021, the exhibition can also be explored in a virtual 360-degree tour. In addition, the association shows special exhibitions and organizes lectures and tours.
