About the museum
The Passat was built in 1911 by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg. Her keel was laid on March 2, the launch followed on September 20, and on Christmas Eve 1911 she left the port of Hamburg on her maiden voyage. As one of the famous “Flying P-Liners” she sailed around the world until 1957, rounding Cape Horn 39 times. In 1951 she received an auxiliary engine and from then on served as a cargo and training ship.
After her last voyage in 1957, the city of Lübeck bought the ship and permanently stationed her in Travemünde in 1960, where she became a landmark. She has been under heritage protection since 1978. The association “Rettet die Passat e. V.” supports her preservation and offers guided tours. The city, through its department for schools and sport, also rents the ship to school classes, clubs and youth groups.
The exhibition on board tells of life and work on a sailing ship. It follows the diary entries of Herbert Scheuffler, who signed on as a ship’s boy in 1932 at the age of 15. There are also event rooms for up to 120 people, sleeping bunks for groups, and the option to marry on board.
