About the museum
The Skimuseum opened in early December 2006, run by an Augsburg sporting goods store, to make the sales areas in the Fabrikschloss more attractive. The listed building once belonged to the Mechanische Baumwollspinnerei und Weberei (mechanical cotton spinning and weaving mill) in Augsburg's textile district. The exhibition was designed by Horst Remmelmayr, a ski expert with TSV Schwaben Augsburg.
The collection was built from loans and holdings of collectors from Germany, Japan, Norway, Austria and the Sudetenland. On a dedicated floor of about 300 square meters, it shows the development of winter sports equipment in the 20th century: around 200 historical and modern ski models, about 30 pairs of ski boots, as well as cross-country skis and ice skates.
Among the oldest pieces is a 1890 rein ski (Zügel-Ski). The collection is complemented by printed matter from the early years of skiing, including pictures, calendars, literature and newspaper clippings, as well as colorful posters for the Winter Olympics since 1924. The museum is run by Sport Förg, and the building is shared with the Turbinenmuseum.
