About the museum
The Turbinenmuseum is devoted to the technology and history of the turbines of the former Mechanische Baumwollspinnerei und Weberei (mechanical cotton spinning and weaving mill) in Augsburg's textile quarter. The factory, founded in 1837 and closed in 1989, was for a long time supplied with power and drive by these installations; the castle-like brick building is now under heritage protection and is called the Fabrikschloss (factory castle).
The turbines, long out of use, still stand where they were in service until the factory closed: in a hall of more than 300 square meters. When the ski museum was set up in the same building at the end of 2006, the opportunity was taken to make the machines the subject of a museum of their own.
The exhibition leads past the individual turbines, and panels explain technical and historical details. Like the neighboring ski museum, the Turbinenmuseum is run by an Augsburg sporting goods store, which operates its outlet in the Fabrikschloss. Admission is free.
