The Kunsthalle Augsburg was founded in 2006 as H2 – Zentrum für Gegenwartskunst (Center for Contemporary Art) and now bears its current name. It is the city museum for modern and contemporary art and uses the first floor of the Glaspalast in Augsburg's Textilviertel (textile quarter).
The building was designed by architect Philipp Jakob Manz as a mechanical cotton spinning and weaving mill and completed in 1910. As an early steel-skeleton building with fully glazed facades, it is considered an important industrial monument. Operations ran until 1989. In 1999 an Augsburg building contractor bought the house, and since 2006 the present concept of use has been in place.
In two halls with a combined 2,700 square meters, special exhibitions alternate with presentations from the city's Sammlung Neue Kunst (Neue Kunst collection), which comprises several hundred works. The house also includes a specialist library and an Artothek (art lending library) for lending art on paper.
