About the museum

The foundation was laid in 1982 by the ethnologist and folk artist Dr. Lotar Balke (died 2008), with a folklore collection that he first displayed on what is now Hauptstraße in Drebkau. In 2000 he moved the exhibition to the upper floor of the house at Am Markt 10. Built in the late-baroque style in 1803, the building was formerly used as a residence and tavern, and was renovated by the town of Drebkau. This increased the exhibition space to roughly 200 square meters. Since 2001 the Förderverein "Museum Sorbische Webstube Drebkau" (friends' association) has supported the museum.

The exhibition covers historical flax processing with working equipment, furniture and household items of rural and petty-bourgeois households, Sorbian or Wendish costumes, and the crafts and local glass industry of Drebkau. In addition, according to the museum, it holds the oldest collection of decorated Easter eggs made using Sorbian techniques.

The collection comprises around 3,600 exhibits from more than 50 countries. Before Easter, around 2,500 eggs from all over the world are shown each year; the oldest piece is a Czech goose egg in wax-resist technique from 1896.
