Inside the Suit – Der Mensch im Raumanzug

Developed by Nuremberg school students together with the Hermann-Oberth-Raumfahrt-Museum, this show explains the technology and history of spacesuits – from early high-altitude pressure suits to future lunar missions.

About the museum

Schleißheim airfield north of Munich is one of the oldest in Germany: from 1912, buildings were erected here for the Royal Bavarian Flying Corps, including the command headquarters and the repair hangar built from 1918, one of the early examples of reinforced concrete construction.

When the dilapidated buildings were slated for demolition in the 1980s, an association was formed to save them and won the support of the Bavarian state government. The Deutsches Museum, which urgently needed additional space for its extensive aerospace collection, took over their use as a museum. From 1986 the historic buildings were restored, mostly with state funds, and supplemented by a modern exhibition hall of steel and glass and a large restoration workshop.

In September 1992 the Flugwerft opened as the first branch museum of the Deutsches Museum. A taxiway added later connects the site with the runway, so aircraft can taxi right up to the museum.

Today, across about 8,000 square meters, the museum displays some 70 airplanes, helicopters, rockets and engines – from early gliders and aircraft of the two World Wars to vertical takeoff aircraft, experimental planes and the Eurofighter prototype. From a gallery, visitors can watch large exhibits being restored in the Gläserne Werkstatt (Glass Workshop).

Highlights

  • Historic repair hangar from 1918 and command headquarters from 1912
  • Europa rocket from 1971 – the only completely preserved example

  • C-160 Transall transport aircraft you can board (on guided tours)
