About the museum

The Ost- und Westpreußenstiftung in Bayern, founded in Munich in 1971, preserves cultural heritage from the former Prussian eastern provinces. In 1986, with the help of the Free State, it acquired a site at the old Oberschleißheim airfield and, with many volunteers, built a collection, documentation and meeting centre there. It transferred a selected group of objects to the Free State for the collection in the Old Palace of Schleißheim, opened in 1991.

Its own holdings were long housed in the so-called starter building, which was demolished in 2008. A former restaurant on the site was then converted into the exhibition building "Haus der Ost- und Westpreußen".

The exhibition on Ferdinand-Schulz-Allee sheds light on episodes ranging from flight and expulsion in 1945 through the Teutonic Order, Frederick the Great and the Napoleonic Wars to the resistance in the Second World War. In addition there are amber, decorative crafts, works from the Königsberg Art Academy, a partial estate of the poet Max Halbe, models of the Marienburg and the Neidenburg, and a library of around 8,000 volumes.
