About the museum

The history of the Sinsheim museum begins in the 19th century with Pastor Karl Wilhelmi, who excavated in the surrounding area from 1827 and in 1831 founded his “Sinsheimer Antiquarium”; his finds later went to Karlsruhe. The present museum goes back to the summer of 1946, when Georg Zink, a former Heidelberg librarian, made a local history collection accessible in the attic of the Old Town Hall. The history association “Freunde Sinsheimer Geschichte” (Friends of Sinsheim History) expanded it.

Around 1975, the museum moved permanently into the Old Town Hall, built 1712–1714; since 1990 it has been run full-time by the town. In 1983, part of the Wilhelmi finds returned as a permanent loan; in 2019, after renovations, a large area for special exhibitions was created; in 2021, the historic Lichdi shop, an early 20th-century colonial goods store, was installed.

Across around 400 square meters in three buildings – Zieglerbau, Altes Rathaus and Haus Frank – the permanent exhibition ranges from prehistory through the Celts and Romans, the Imperial City of Sinsheim and craftsmanship in the historic roof structure, to the Baden Revolution of 1848/49, for which Sinsheim, as a “Ort der Demokratie” (Place of Democracy), forms a focus.
