About the museum

The roots of the museum lie with the Historischer Verein Dillingen (Dillingen Historical Society), which in 1889 opened a museum of the city and the society in the Johanniskapelle of Dillingen Palace. A new building designed by Gabriel von Seidl did not materialize for lack of state subsidies; in 1910 the collection moved into the former Hofstallkaserne (court stables barracks), where it stayed until 1972.

In 1973 the city acquired the Unteres Stiftshaus on the Hafenmarkt, a building with a core from the 15th/16th century that once belonged to members of the collegiate chapter of St. Peter and served as a prison after secularization. The city and the society agreed that the city would operate the museum and the society would contribute its holdings as a permanent loan. After the conversion, a first partial opening followed in 1981; by 1986 the last section was finished.

The museum grew with the neighboring Angerer-Haus, an early modern craftsman's house: the city bought it in the early 2000s, had it renovated and opened it in 2008; since then an elevator has served the rooms.

The exhibition ranges from Stone Age, Celtic, Roman and Alemannic finds from the surrounding area through city history and the Hochstift Augsburg (prince-bishopric of Augsburg) with its university and monasteries to Dillingen crafts. Separate sections are devoted to Sebastian Kneipp, Regens Wagner, the submarine inventor Wilhelm Bauer and Dillingen artists.
