About the museum
The museum is based on the collection of Dr. Anton Lebherz, a grammar school teacher from Lauingen, who gathered around 25,000 minerals and fossils over the course of his life. In 1969 he gave part of it to the town of Lauingen, and in 1972 the municipal exhibition opened in the former slaughterhouse on the Danube.
After the building was sold in 1996, the collection was stored in a bunker for many years. In 2022 it reopened in its current rooms on Brüderstraße. Since then it has been expanded, including through a long-term loan from the Sparkasse Dillingen with particularly fine minerals and loans from the dissolved museum in Gerstetten. The display is arranged in sections on fossils, feldspars, fluorite, calcite, alpine fissure minerals, semi-precious stones and base-metal minerals.
The collection has been run as a volunteer effort by Reinhard Kochendörfer since 1979.
