About the museum
The Heimathaus der Stadt Lauingen is housed in the former priory building of St. Agnes Monastery. A report from 1783 already mentions that the town kept a variety of antiquities; the house is considered the oldest municipal collection in Bavaria. Many further finds and art objects were combined with these pieces into one exhibition.
On the ground floor, three rooms show a selection of the prehistoric and early historic collection, from the Old Stone Age through the Bronze, Urnfield, Hallstatt, and Celtic periods to Roman finds from Faimingen and Aislingen, and finds from the Alemannic period and the Middle Ages. On the upper floor hangs the most valuable piece, Mathis Gerung's painting "Lager Kaiser Karls V. vor Lauingen 1546" (Camp of Emperor Charles V before Lauingen, 1546). There are also town history items, two rooms on folk art and customs, and a section on Albertus Magnus, the Doctor of the Church born in Lauingen.
The attic houses craft and farm tools as well as a "Raum der Besinnung" (room of reflection) with a Holy Sepulchre, wrought-iron grave crosses, and pewter coffins from the ducal crypt in the Martinsmünster. In the ridge room, a storage area holds around 200,000 archaeological finds from the ground.
