Anniversary exhibition marking 20 years of the illustration project, with international illustrators, award-winning works from school workshops and applied illustration from Rüsselsheim.
The Stadt- und Industriemuseum opened on April 29, 1976, and as the first town museum in Germany combined the history of technology, industry and society. It is housed in the Rüsselsheim Fortress: since the end of the 14th century the place lay in the shadow of a castle, which was gradually expanded into a Hessian state fortress. Ramparts, moats and rondels still form the setting of the museum today.
The permanent exhibition runs chronologically through four sections. "Raumzeit" is devoted to the archaeological traces of the Main tip from the Stone Age to the Roman period, "Ortszeit" to everyday life in village and fortress since the Middle Ages. "Maschinenzeit" tells how the rural community became an industrial town, from the first manufactories through the sewing machine, bicycle and automobile production at Opel to mass production. "Weltzeit" covers reconstruction, growth and crises from the postwar period to the present.
The museum sees itself as a place where history is written together with the town's society and has been developing inclusive offers since 2016, such as multisensory tours for blind and visually impaired visitors. A café in the fortress, a museum shop and audio tours of the fortress complex complement the visit.
